Sur une proposition de Caroline Pradal, 22,48 m² invite quelques artistes étroitement liés à « La Générale » à s’approprier la totalité des mètres carrés mis à leur disposition. Dès l’année 2005, ce collectif d’artistes s’est rassemblé sous l’appellation « La Générale ». Plate-forme de travail consacrée à la production d’œuvres et à l’organisation d’expositions, de concerts ou performances, hôte régulière d’artistes et de commissaires d’expositions français et étrangers, « La Générale » s’est rapidement forgée une place reconnue dans le réseau des jeunes scènes émergentes internationales. Ce collectif d'artistes se transforme, s'adapte, s’amplifie, tout en répondant à un vrai besoin de rassemblement. Ils investissent de façon temporaire des espaces, comme la manufacture de céramique de Sèvres où ils travaillent actuellement. Ces espaces éphémères se réduisent dans le temps, lorsque les propriétaires cherchent à se réapproprier les lieux. Dans un souci de renouvellement, d'expérimentation et d'expansion, la Générale cherche d’ailleurs actuellement un nouvel espace de travail qui lui permettra de poursuivre son engagement culturel. Ces moments critiques confrontent ces artistes aux problèmes relatifs à une cohabitation étroite et forcée. L’hétérogénéité des productions d’un artiste à l’autre, le stockage des œuvres dans un lieu qui est aussi un atelier empiètent sur l’espace mental et physique de la production. Le projet d’exposition au 22,48 m² veut commenter le conditionnement lié à la cohabitation et à la réduction d'espace. Il cherche à le voir comme une contrainte forte mais aussi nourricière pour le travail et la réflexion. Il est l’occasion pour les artistes de partager leur travail de création et de le confronter aux autres. La surface de 22,48 m² impose ainsi des solutions d’organisation et de cohabitation pour ces œuvres hétéroclites. Les artistes cherchent une hypothèse d’accrochage - prenant en considération l’ensemble disparate que constituent ces œuvres et leurs options de stockage dans un seul et même espace. STOCK OPTION, titre emprunté au champ lexical du monde financier comme un rappel à l’actualité, trouve ici une autre résonance. Entre organisation et chaos les frontières sont floues, les solutions multiples. Stock Option est une installation en mouvement qui se poursuit tout au long de l’exposition, à la recherche de solutions alternatives, avec le risque peut-être de ne jamais trouver d’équilibre, et de rester dans un éternel « work in progress ». L'exposition sera lancée par une performance de Fashion Garage lors du vernissage du 13 janvier. Ce même jour, d’autres galeries de Belleville font également leur vernissage (Galerie de Roussan, Galerie Samy Abraham, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Suzanne Tarasiève Paris/Loft 19).

Following the proposal of Caroline Pradal, 22,48 m² brings together a group of artists closely related to “La Générale” and invites them to take over all available square meters.
Since 2005 the artist collective “La Générale” acts as a working platform dedicated to the production of artworks and the organisation of exhibitions, concerts or performances, and as a regular host of artists and curators of different origins. “La Générale” became rapidly known as a significant member within the networks of a young and international scene of emerging artists.
This artist collective is continually changing, adapting and developing, all the time responding to a real need to get together. The temporary take over of spaces, like for instance the porcelain factory in Sèvres where they work at the moment, is an integral part of their work. Momentary and transient, these spaces shrink with the time as the owners attempt to re-appropriate them. Constantly trying to innovate, to experiment and to expand, “La Générale” is currently looking for a new working space to allow the group to pursue its cultural engagement.
Such critical situations see the artists confronted to problems linked to a confined and forced form of cohabitation. The diversity of their works and their storage in a space that's equally used as a working studio affects their mental and physical space of production.
The exhibition at 22,48 m² seeks to comment on the conditioning inherent to cohabitation and the reduction of space. It tries to see it as a constraint that's equally infringing and nourishing and thus stimulating work and critical thought. It provides an occasion for these artists to share their creative work and to confront it to the works of others.
Thus the surface area of 22,48m2 imposes solutions for the organisation and cohabitation of a diverse range of artworks. The artists search for a possibility to exhibit their works by taking into consideration the diversity of the pieces and the way they might be stocked in one and the same space. STOCK OPTION, a term borrowed from the lexical field of finance as a reminder to current affairs, finds a new resonance here.
Between organisation and chaos the lines are blurred and the solutions vary. Stock Option is an installation in constant movement that continues throughout the exhibition pursuing its quest for alternative solutions with the possible risk of never find an equilibrium and to remain an eternal work in progress.
The exhibition will be launched by a performance of Fashion Garage at the opening on January 13. On the same day, other galleries in Belleville will organize their opening as well : (Galerie de Roussan, Galerie Samy Abraham, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Suzanne Tarasiève Paris/Loft 19).
